Think You’re Eating Healthy? 19 Foods That are Not as Innocent as They Seem

We’ve all been there, nibbling away at our so-called “health foods”, convinced we’re treating our bodies like temples. But, hold onto your hats! These 19 foods aren’t as great as we wish they were, so get to checking!

Granola

Granola, the mountain-climber’s muse. Oats, nuts, seeds, it sounds like an earthy delight. However, many store-bought variants are little sugar parties in a box. Some even have more sugar than certain candy bars!

Diet Soda

Pop open a can of diet soda and you might think you’re avoiding the sugar trap. However, while it lacks calories, it compensates with artificial sweeteners which, let’s face it, are like the distant relatives you didn’t invite to the party but who show up anyway.

Fruit Juice

Many juices are bereft of their natural fibers and are loaded with sugars, making that morning OJ closer to a soda. Maybe next time go for a whole fruit, or at least ensure your juice is 100% natural with no added sugars.

Agave Nectar

While it sounds exotic and healthy, remember, not everything that glitters is gold. Agave nectar is actually high in fructose, which isn’t the best news for your liver or your waistline.

Veggie Chips

Veggie chips sound like a dream come true for snack enthusiasts. But pinch yourself because you might be dreaming. Most are still fried and doused in salt, so you’re really not getting all that much else in exchange.

Flavored Yogurt

Diving spoon-first into a pot of flavored yogurt might seem innocent. But lurking below that creamy surface might be heaps of added sugars and flavors. For a purer approach, buy plain yogurt; add your own fresh fruits and a drizzle of honey.

Gluten-Free Snacks

Going gluten-free sounds like the highway to health. But caution, there are speed bumps ahead! Lots of gluten-free snacks amp up the sugar and fat to make up for taste.

Rice Cakes

They’re low in calories, true, but also low in almost everything else, including nutrients. Plus, they can spike your blood sugar. Let’s face it, they’re the unsalted popcorn of the snack world – they’ll do in a pinch, but you’re not writing home about them.

Packaged Turkey

Packaged turkey seems like a lean choice, but be wary, as many brands pack in the sodium too. It might be lean protein, but it’s thirsty for change. A Sunday roast could provide healthier, tastier sandwich fillings for the week.

Sports Drinks

Unless you’re sweating buckets all the time, these brightly colored liquids might just be overkill. Keep it real with good ol’ H2O and nature’s sports drink: the banana.

Fat-Free Foods

The problem with fat-free food is that you quickly realize the fat’s often replaced with sugars or other fillers. It’s like a movie sequel – it promises the same goodness as the original but rarely delivers.

Breakfast Cereals

Those colorful boxes lined up on the supermarket shelf promise a burst of energy to kickstart your day. But some are more sugar rush than nutritious nosh. If sugar’s making a starring appearance, maybe pivot to another pick.

Salad Dressings

Your leafy greens are a canvas. But drizzle on some store-bought dressings and you might just be adding a sugary, fatty mess. Making your dressing at home gives you control over what’s going on your greens.

Wraps

Wraps are the cool, trendy alternative to bread. But don’t be fooled by their thin demeanor. Many are calorie-heavy and contain unhealthy fats. Always check the label or, even better, make your own!

Dried Fruit

Sun-dried fruits seem like nature’s candy. However, the drying process concentrates the sugars, and some brands add even more! Sometimes, less fancy is just better.

Trail Mix

Those tiny bites can be deceptive. Some mixes are more candy and less health, especially when chocolate chips and sugary fruits dominate the mix.

Bran Muffins

These bakery behemoths can be packed with sugars and fats, making them less “start the day right” and more “might as well have had cake.” Maybe next time opt for whole grain toast with a touch of avocado.

Smoothie Bowls

Swirling colors, an array of toppings; smoothie bowls look like works of art. But remember, just because it’s in a bowl doesn’t make it saintly. When making your own, keep an eye on the ingredients and portion size.

Pretzels

Ah, the humble pretzel! Surely, a twisty snack that feels lighter than chips can’t be a culprit? But these salty spirals can be refined and void of nutrients. They’re fun in moderation, but don’t let them dominate your plate.
