This Dad Is Planning His Son’s Birthday Party but Is Reluctant to Invite His Nephew Because He Thinks He’s a Spoiled Brat

A dad with a young son recently asked Reddit if he should ask his bratty nephew to his son’s birthday bash. The nephew always caused trouble, and the dad was fed up. Here’s his story.

The man’s son will soon be turning 11, so the dad is planning a big birthday party for the whole family. There’s just one problem. He wants to invite the entire family but not his eldest nephew.

The nephew is hard work

His eldest nephew is his brother’s son, but unfortunately, the boy is “a real piece of work,” he says.

The nephew is rude to everyone and cannot stand the rest of the family. “There is definitely some parental alienation going on as his mother had no interest in the family even when she was dating my brother,” the man said.

In fact, when she was pregnant with the nephew, she did everything she could to keep him away from the family.

So now, the nephew seems to have adopted his mother’s attitude and is rude to his cousins, siblings, and stepmom.

They haven’t spent much time with him

As the mother didn’t really socialize with the family, her son was rarely seen at family events either.

He always misbehaves

On the few occasions he did turn up, he misbehaved, got annoyed with his dad, demanded to go home, and refused to talk to anyone. Basically, the kid is a brat.

They threw him a big party

For example, for his 11th birthday, his parents threw him a big birthday party, and the back garden was completely decked out with a giant cake, balloons, streamers, games, and a large BBQ.

He was a brat

However, instead of being grateful and happy that his dad went to all that trouble, the nephew threw a tantrum and wouldn’t talk to anyone. He sat in the corner for hours and refused to speak to anyone.

The dad feels sorry for his brother

So this dad feels really bad for his brother, whom he loves dearly, especially knowing how excited he was when his brother found out he was going to be a dad. They both wanted to be good fathers as their own dad wasn’t really involved in their lives.

He doesn’t want to invite the nephew

But now his own son’s birthday is coming up, and he doesn’t see the point of inviting a kid who hates being with the family and probably won’t even want to come.

And if the nephew does turn up, what happens if he has a tantrum and spoils the party for everyone else?

Would it be wrong of him?

So the man asked for advice on whether he should invite the kid.

One user said, “There is an easy way to deal with this. Plan the gathering on your nephew’s mother’s weekend, and most of the problems will be solved.”

Another said, “If the nephew wouldn’t show up anyway, you might as well extend the invite. It keeps the peace with your brother, and if your nephew ever realizes that this side of the fam is decent, you can always say that he was included, and he never took you up on it.”
